Berlin's attractions in Germany, which can be discovered by a English city guide in Berlin in Germany

The first mention of Berlin comes from the 13th century. The city has always been at the centre of events. It was the capital of the Kingdom of Prussia (1701-1918), the German Empire (1871-1918), the Waimar Republic (1919-1933) and the Third Reich (1933-1945). After World War II the city was divided: East Berlin became the capital, while West Berlin was surrounded by the Berlin Wall (1961-1989). After reunification, in 1990, the city regained its status as the capital of the whole Germany. Today, freed from the dark past, it has become a more exciting, future-oriented and modern city in Europe.

In Berlin you can admire buildings from different eras. Among the buildings worth seeing are the Charlottenburg Castle, the Brandenburg Gate and the Chancellery. The Reichstag, the German parliament building, was rebuilt by the British architect Norman Foster in the 1990s. Today a glass dome rises above the meeting room; you can climb it and enjoy the amazing views of the city. Along the tree-lined Unter Den Linden Avenue, stretching from the Brandenburg Gate to Berliner Stadtschloss, which was once Berlin's most important street, there are many important institutions, including Humboldt University.

There are hundreds of galleries in the city. Every year Berlin hosts the Art Forum, an international art fair focused on contemporary art. There are countless fashionable shops, clubs, bars and galleries around the Hackescher Markt. Like a magnet, Berlin attracts young people, and its exciting nightlife and club scene are second to none. Among the city's annual festivals, they are worth mentioning: PopKomm, Myfest and Christopher Street Day, the largest European gay festival.

Berlin boasts a huge number of museums - there are over one hundred and fifty of them. They present collections of contemporary art, monuments of ancient Egypt and ancient Greece, Berlin's past, Bauhaus achievements and Jewish culture. There are also places such as Checkpoint Charlie (the border crossing between West Berlin and the GDR) and the Berlin Wall. The buildings from the Museum Island have been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
